Introduction
Welcome to Neoseeker's Moons of Madness walkthrough and guide. This guide contains everything you need to know to efficiently solve the game’s many puzzles, complete the story, and unlock all of the Steam Achievements in a single six-hour playthrough. Yes, even the alternate ending Achievements!
Moons of Madness is a first-person horror adventure game set on the planet Mars. As Shane Newehart, you must explore the Orochi Mars Base in effort to better understand the nightmare experienced in the short prologue – and to ultimately put a stop to the unleashed Filth. Fans of Lovecraftian horror stories will certainly feel at home as Newehart confronts his worst fears.
As an adventure game, players can expect a fair amount of puzzle-solving, a heavy dose of story, and even an occasional combat sequence. Though not an action game by any stretch, Moons of Madness has more interactivity than may be expected -- there’s even a brief stealth sequence and what can reasonably be considered a boss battle.
This guide takes a minimalist approach so as to not spoil the story-rich experience. Navigational cues are provided as necessary, but our focus is on helping you solve the puzzles and escape the tricky bits without frustration. This guide is organized by chapter and subchapter to coincide with the in-game sequences.
How to Play
Moons of Madness doesn’t boast a complex array of systems, but there are several concepts worth understanding before beginning play. This section provides an overview of the basic skills you’ll need to get up and running as quickly as possible. This includes the controls, save system, maintaining oxygen, and using the BioGage, among other aspects of gameplay.
Controls
The game can be played either with a gamepad or mouse and keyboard. Given the lack of combat and relatively slow pace of the game, both methods suffice, though we find a controller to feel most natural. The following table includes the corresponding controls for an Xbox or PlayStation controller.

Save System
Moons of Madness employs a Checkpoint system, meaning there is no way to manually save your progress. Instead, the game auto-saves at pre-determined points throughout the game. Depending on where you are when you have to quit playing, you may need to replay to catch back up to where you last were. Though this is generally not significant, it’s worth keeping in mind when quitting your session. We recommend pushing on to the next checkpoint before exiting the game, as identified by the save icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
The checkpoint system makes it impossible to replay a prior chapter or earlier part of the game without starting over from the beginning. Fortunately, only two Achievements can be missed, and we call special attention to both of them.
Navigation
- Flashlight: The Flashlight comes in handy throughout the game. Shane always has the Flashlight handy, whether he’s wearing a helmet or not. Using it makes it easier to see where to go and to read the many notes left behind.
- Red Light, Green Light: As is often the case, green lights represent unlocked doors. Red means no access.
- Floor Signs: The directions to many of the rooms in the Mars Base are labeled on the floor. When in doubt, check the signs.
Items and Inventory
- Picking up an item doesn’t automatically add it to your inventory. Use the Look Controls to center on the item while Shane is holding it and press the Interact Button when prompted to “Add to Inventory.”
- Numerous items can be investigated throughout the game, but very few are useful or necessary in a gameplay sense. Inspect any item with an orange indicator on it, but don’t worry if most can’t be added to the inventory. It’s particularly worth taking time to read the various email, letters, and other documents littering the base, as it contributes a lot to the story.
- When inspecting items, pay attention to the blue and orange UI indicators. Orange means you can interact in some way (flip, manipulate, etc). The blue hexagon typically means to Add to Inventory.
BioGage
- Zoom in at any time to make the BioGage screen go full screen. This also works when reading documents.
- Can scan the area for items and also, depending on settings, view a brief pathway that shows which direction to go. This is setting that needs to be active in the options menu. It makes the game easier, but also makes it much easier to identify objects that can be interacted with.
Performing an Extravehicular Activity (EVA)
- Whenever leaving the climate-controlled Mars Base, Shane needs to wear a Helmet and be mindful of Oxygen levels. Every airlock has a rack for helmets, as well as an Oxygen tank and hose. Refill before leaving.
- Never remove the helmet inside an Airlock while the atmosphere is set to external air pressure. Always use the button to the right of the external door to pressurize the Airlock area before removing the helmet.
