Etrian Odyssey Zodiac

The third game scraps all previous classes, opting instead to go with a set of 12 completely new classes. Many of these classes have parallels to be drawn with the classes of the previous two games. Unlike predecessors, instead of only class skills being available, there are now Common skills that can be accessed in a different tab when allocating skill points. These skills consist of.

My Etrian Odyssey: Tales of the Greedy LizardEveryone’s favorite Nintendo DS dungeon crawler is back for a third installment. Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City takes us back to the punishing turn-based RPG though with a new labyrinth, new towns, and sea exploration.

This version should be a bit more friendly to gamers and features great art, but don’t worry, you still make your own maps and put together your own party. And the game is still plenty tough so get ready for some old school, throw-your-DS-against-a-wall moments, as well as some rewarding battles.Etrian Odyssey III might have the same basic gameplay as before, but there are now more classes, tweaked party strategies, and seafaring (which is limited to a set number of turns per voyage so it’s not just a watery dungeon). It’s an update to the formula not a drastic change, as fans of the series will be happy to know.

And it’s not even as much of a tweak as I expected, based on early talk about making the game more accessible. The game starts off strong. You construct your own highly customized party, explore/map the first level of the dungeon, and venture out to sea. It’ll have your wondering why you haven’t picked up a dungeon crawler in so long. Then, about two hours in, you hit the first boss (known as a FOE using EO‘s terminology).

It’s a huge monster known as the Greedy Lizard. And then, all of a sudden, you remember why you stopped playing these games.Or at least that’s that happened to me. The boss is brutal, with a poison attack that will have your toughest character dead in a single turn. With one character dead your combat effectiveness is greatly reduced and you might as well start over. So maybe you grind a bit, but leveling up is a slow process and the improvement from one level to the next is marginal. Restart the game, build a better party, and lose all that work? Personally I got all my characters up a level or two, got a few new weapons (complete with imbued upgrades that cause blindness) and I beat him.

Then I started hobbling my injured party back to a save point and I was killed on the way back by some sort of super rooster. What did I get for my trouble? So I loaded my last save game and went on to fight the Greedy Lizard another 10 (or so) times. Boy, does that poison attack suck. Eventually I beat him, only to learn that there is more FOE on that level.

Oh yeah, and FOEs regenerate.I did’t put down that story to scare anyone away from the game, but know what you are getting into. The game can be merciless, bordering on cruel. After losing to a boss a few times a tip would be nice, or how about a mode where you keep the experience you gain after your party dies? This would be huge for me because, even if you had to start from the town again, at least you’d not have lost the time you just spent. As it is you can save your map data after dying, but it’s the lost time (and most of your time is taken up in battles, gaining experience) that really bothers me.I beat that first FOE with my party at level 8.

Sure, it felt good (there was fist pumping), but part of the fun had been lost forever. Of course the thing to do is to avoid the FOE (and subsequent FOEs) because you don’t have to beat them and the game is designed so that their predetermined paths are easy to avoid. After skipping past them (while traveling the 2nd level at night to avoid the super roosters) you can rack up lots of experience, level up, and then beat the Greedy Lizard quiet handily by the time your entire party is at level 10. At this point you’ll have nectar (which revives dead characters) which is a huge help as well. With EO3, a little knowledge goes a long way.

And with that in mindEtrian Odyssey III tips, tricks, and hints (learn from my mistakes!):. Skip around! Stuck or bored with a section of the dungeon? Take your boat out–it’s a fun break without much chance of dying. Catching fish can bring in a lot of money too. Don’t forget about the quests. Side quests are not a focus of the game, but they can give you a surprising amount of experience.

Get these done early and you’re characters will have an extra level or two under their belts. Smaller parties level up faster so be strategic with your party size.

You’ll gain much more experience 2.5x faster with two people in your party instead of five. Don’t ever, ever leave home without ariadne string, or another quick way to get back to town.I have a lot of time left to put into EO3, but I’m actually looking forward to spending more time with the game.

I know it’ll be a lot of fun until I hit the next frustration point, but when that happens, I’ll know what to do.
